Sedation Dentistry And Its Uses In Dental Office

Do you think having your teeth cleaned makes your body tense? Is it better for you to have a toothache than to go to the dentist? You’re not the only one. Sedation Dentistry can reduce anxiety in many patients. Many people are afraid of going to the dentist because they don’t want to get any treatment. Excel dental may help people who are afraid of the dentist.

When you go to the dentist, you don’t have to feel the pain

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help people relax while having dental work done. It’s sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” but that’s not entirely true. A few people have general anesthesia, so they don’t usually wake up from their sleep.

The levels of sedation that are used:

There is very little sedation. You are awake but relaxed. Moderate sedation, which used to be called “conscious sedation,” means that you may slur your words when you speak and not remember much of the procedure. You are on the edge of consciousness as you sleep but can still be awakened.

The types of sedation that are used in the dentist’s office:

Laughing Gas

You have inhaled very little sedation. It’s also known as “laughing gas,” and you breathe in through a mask that goes over your nose. The gas makes you feel better. In general, the gas wears off quickly. Your dentist can control how much sedation you get, and the gas tends to go away soon. After the procedure, this is the only type of sedation where you might drive yourself home.

Putting something in your mouth to make you sleepy depends on how much oral sedation is given. It can be very mild or powerful. You take a pill to get a little tired. If you take Halcion, which comes from the same group of drugs like Valium, you’re likely to feel a little better about an hour before the surgery.

Pill

You’ll be sleepy, but you’ll still be awake. A more significant dose could be given to make someone feel a little tired. Anesthesia like this is what most people think of when they think of sedation dentistry. Some people get so tired from moderate oral sedation that they fall asleep during the surgery. If you give them a gentle shake, though, they can usually get up and go.

IV mild sedation

In this case, you get the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work a lot faster. This method lets the dentist adjust the level of sedation all the time.

Deep sedation and general anesthesia will be used to help you sleep. You will be given medicines that will make you almost unconscious or completely unconscious during the procedure. You will be deeply asleep at all times, though. In general, when you’re under general anesthesia, you can’t quickly get up until the anesthesia wears off or is reversed with medicine.
